Sustainability in Grant Writing: Insights from the 2024 Deliver America Conference

This week, I had the pleasure of attending the 2024 Deliver America conference at the Horseshoe in Las Vegas. This event, focusing on retail, logistics, and e-commerce, brought together industry leaders to discuss key challenges and opportunities in the current landscape. Among the many topics covered, one that stood out to me was sustainability—a theme that resonates deeply with both the conference agenda and my own business practices at TAB Professional Services, LLC. And, while I was primarily attending in support of my colleague, LaTonya Miller's enterprise, Milcham Luxury Fashion Co., I gained insights and learned from others.

Sustainability is more than just a buzzword; it's a crucial pivot for businesses aiming to thrive in a resource-constrained world, especially as we witness the escalating impacts of climate change. Recent events like Hurricanes Milton and Helene have underscored the urgency of this issue, devastating communities in Florida and North Carolina, and showcasing the vulnerability of logistics and delivery systems to extreme weather. These hurricanes have not only caused immediate disruptions but also long-term economic impacts, making it clear that sustainable practices are vital for resilience.

Incorporating Sustainability into Grant Writing

  1. Educating Clients: One of the first steps we can take is to educate our clients on the importance of including sustainable practices in their project proposals. This not only enhances the appeal of their grant applications but also encourages them to think long-term about their project impacts.
  2. Prioritizing Green Grants: We can prioritize grants that focus on sustainability. By doing so, we align ourselves with funders who are committed to environmental stewardship, and we help funnel resources toward projects that promise a more sustainable future.
  3. Advocating for Sustainable Practices: As grant writers, we have the unique opportunity to advocate for sustainable practices in the projects we help bring to life. Whether it’s suggesting the use of recycled materials in a construction project or recommending energy-efficient systems for a new community center, we can be agents of change.

Sustainability in Our Operations

At TAB Professional Services, we’re also looking inward to see how we can operate more sustainably. From minimizing paper use and maximizing digital workflows to choosing green hosting services for our website, every little action contributes to a larger impact.

Lastly, I am exploring more ways to embed sustainability into our day-to-day operations and client engagements. Whether it’s through supporting remote work to reduce carbon emissions or choosing sustainable vendors for our business needs, the goal is clear: integrate practices that support environmental, social, and economic health.

The 2024 Deliver America conference was a reminder of the power of collective action and innovation. As we continue to navigate the complexities of grant writing and business management, let us also commit to being stewards of a sustainable future.
