Capitalizing on Downtime: Networking and Skill-Building for a Budding Grant Writing Business

As the CEO of TAB Professional Services, LLC, I can't emphasize enough the importance of turning downtime into growth opportunities. Especially in the ever-evolving field of grant writing and management, being proactive during slower periods can make all the difference for your business. This month, I took several key steps to strengthen my network, increase my resource arsenal, and position myself for future success.

Making the Right Connections

I recently rekindled a wonderful connection at a small business support organization, which is invaluable for two reasons. First, it opens the door to potential collaborations and client referrals. Second, organizations like these often offer insights into market trends and training resources that can be crucial for a new business.

Association Memberships: A Double Whammy of Credibility and Resources

Becoming a member of the National Grants Management Association (NGMA) adds another layer of credibility to my grant management expertise. Association memberships like this and the Grants Professional Association offer not just a network of industry experts, but also training resources, webinars, and a community to share and solve challenges collectively.

Digital Networking and Resource Tools

Investing in the paid version of LinkedIn and Upwork allows me greater visibility and access to potential clients, while offering me the tools to target my outreach efforts more effectively.

Specialized Search Engines

Acquiring the pro version of Grants Gopher has provided me with a specialized search engine that streamlines the process of identifying suitable grants for my clients, saving time and increasing efficiency.

Community Involvement

Joining the Latino Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas is not just a business decision, but also a way to give back to my community. This membership allows me to tap into a vibrant network of Latino business owners, offering localized opportunities and community-specific insights.

Why This Matters?

  1. Expanded Network: Every membership, connection, and registration expands my business network, creating opportunities for client acquisition and partnerships.
  2. Resource Access: Paid memberships often come with a treasure trove of resources that can give you an edge in grant writing and management.
  3. Community Engagement: Localized networks like community chambers enable grassroots engagement, which can be incredibly beneficial for niche or community-focused grants.
  4. Visibility: Paid versions of platforms like LinkedIn and Upwork enhance my visibility, making it easier for potential clients to find me.
  5. Skill Enhancement: Continuous learning is a byproduct of these activities. Whether it's through an NGMA webinar or a seminar by the small business support organization, I'm constantly upgrading my skills.

By taking proactive steps during downtime, I'm not just waiting for opportunities; I'm creating them. And in the unpredictable world of grant writing and management, that's a win worth celebrating.
