Breaking Out of the Silo: The Power of Community and Resources for Small Businesses

Running a small business often feels like navigating a ship alone through uncharted waters. At TAB Professional Services, LLC, I am currently experiencing this firsthand. The journey, marked by both challenges and milestones, has reinforced a crucial lesson: the importance of embracing community support and resources.

Navigating Certification and Taxation Challenges

One significant challenge I am tackling is the process of becoming a diversity-certified business. This certification could open numerous doors for TAB Professional Services, enhancing our credibility and expanding our market opportunities. However, proving my ethnicity as part of the certification process has presented unexpected difficulties, leading me through a maze of complex bureaucracies.

Similarly, managing finances, specifically taxes, has proven to be another steep learning curve. Not saving enough to cover taxes at year-end was a jarring experience that highlighted a gap in my financial planning.

Just last night, at a small business mixer, a presentation stated, "It Takes a Village." This resonated deeply with me, highlighting the broad network of people—including the ongoing support from my patient husband—who are cheering me on. I have met so many amazing supporters on this journey, including those who think of me when someone needs a grant writer. Their referrals have been invaluable, underscoring the power of community and connectedness. It reminded me of the power of reaching out. Before launching my business, I connected with the local small business connector to inquire about start up funding options. This led me to a community development financial institution that not only funded my loan but also offered me a role as a program administrator for an entrepreneur accelerator program based on the strength of my business plan and my expertise. This dual role of navigating my own business while aiding others has been incredibly eye-opening as I new learn skills and tasks daily.

The Importance of Asking Questions

These experiences underscore the importance of asking questions and seeking help. Engaging with financial planners and consultants for navigating certification processes is transforming how I manage TAB Professional Services. Joining business networks and participating in forums related to my industry has been invaluable, providing moral support and practical advice from peers who have faced similar obstacles.

People often wonder why I am so transparent about the challenges I face. For me, sharing openly about my challenges serves as a form of therapy. Additionally, you never know who can help unless you share. This isn't about complaining, but genuinely sharing experiences. By being open, I may help someone else facing similar issues, now or in the future. This approach not only helps me navigate my own path but also contributes to building a supportive community around TAB Professional Services.

For small business owners, the feeling of isolation can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be a constant. Learning to reach out for help has been a game-changer for me. There are countless programs and people ready and willing to support entrepreneurs. Embracing these resources can not only help solve immediate problems but also foster a sense of community and belonging that enriches our professional and personal lives.

Remember, we are not alone. There is strength in numbers and power in shared knowledge. For anyone struggling in silence, consider this a sign to reach out. Help is there, and it can make all the difference.
